Brunson Model 71 Optical Transit- After contacting Brunson directly and providing pictures and serial number. They were able to determine which model I had in my possession. This unit was manufactured in 1962 and appears to be a version of a model 71 Transit; however this unit appears to have a mirror on one side of the axis as well as a vernier circle on the axis. These characteristics would classify it as an Optical Transit. This unit is virtually the same as the 771-H except for the fact the 771-H had a larger axis. The unit comes equipped with a 196-1 Combination Eyepiece unit which allows for Auto collimation, Auto reflection, Projection and Right Angle Viewing. The unit also has a 190 Single Axis Micrometer. This is an antique Brunson Survey Level Instrument. The instrument itself shows signs of use. But is in great condition. The item has something to do with surveying. Sorry but I have limited knowledge about this item. The pocket transit has an old worn leather case that it fits in so that it can be attached to a leather belt. The leather case has been used and shows surface wear. The leather case is missing a metal buckle or some type of fastener for the strap to hold the top of the case shut. The metal case is tarnished from age and use. It needs to be polished and/or cleaned. The inside mirror is not broken and the needle moves to the right directions. This insightful design Keuffel& Esser came up with in 1926 for their pocket transit is true marvel.There has been many copies and.Modification's of this transit. I have not cleaned it other than wiping off the case showing the Patent where you will see keuffel& Esser N.Y feb.2.1926. Keuffel& Esser have made many great things to help shape this country.This is one of them. The leather case comes with it but,did not come with the transit originally. It would have come in a box.The leather case with the belt clip would have made it more practical to use for our service men and engineer's alike. This has a few very small scratches and the case has wear and a small crack. The instrument has no dings or evidence of being dropped. There may be a piece of foam missing from the case but i'm not sure as it all fits very snugly. It comes with a 6 oz brass bob and is Menomonee Fall. Wisconsin.
