This is a set of Klein climbing gaffs/spikes and hooks, as well as a safety belt, size 40. These were purchased used, and I didn't use them much either. The date on the belt as to when it was made is 4/83. They were in my telephone repair truck and I used them to climb telephone poles once in a while. Everything needed to use these gaffs, hooks, and belt are provided and there are no worn spots on the belt or anywhere. These items are in very good condition. They definitely could be used to climb trees to trim them!

This auction is for one"used" pair of Bashlin aluminum pole climbers(with upper/lower straps. Pads and leather gaff guards) and one Bashlin gaff sharpening kit(which is missing the stone but is otherwise complete) The reason for the quotation marks around the word"used" is that these fine pole climbers spent most of their existence collecting dust(and some surface rust) in the back of a van. And have not been extensively used at all for their intended function- if my memory serves me correctly, I'd say half a dozen climbs or less. The climbers are aluminum alloy(much lighter than their steel counterparts) And the gaffs are set at a 17-degree angle(Bashlin claims that they are"the most forgiving gaffs on the market" and- having used both Klein and Bashlin climbers ... morebefore realizing that I was probably better off using a ladder- I would agree) The spikes have some surface rust, but are in like new condition otherwise. There is some surface rust on the rings for the bottom straps and the upper and lower buckles, but all parts are fully functional and free from damage. Straps, pads, and gaff guards show some blemishes, but are likewise in like new condition other than that. The sharpening kit contains a gaff gauge. Mill file w/ wooden handle, and instructions for sharpening and maintaining gaffs(sorry about losing the sharpening stone along the way) in a sturdy carrying case. I would love to see these climbers go to a good home. Where they will at last have the satisfaction of serving the purpose for which they were created!

This is a vintage set of tree climbing gear that was supposedly used by a Marine Corps sniper in Vietnam. I cannot vouch for the truth in this. But he had no reason to lie to me either. What we have are the left and right spur that definitely needs new straps. They are both stamped 16 M.Klein& Sons. They will need new padding as well. One belt is definitely military. But has no markings other than S1.69(very hard to read) stamped in black ink on the belt. The second belt has a brass manufacturer's tag that says Mine Safety Appliance Company, Pittsburgh, PA 1949. These are real tree climbing spikes with the long gaffs for reaching through the bark to get into the meat of the tree-not pole climbers with the short spikes. You could use them for pole climbing but not on a regular basis. metal parts are in good condition and they are adjustable in length. They are set at the shortest length possible right now and they are 15 7/8" set that way. The calf pad for the left spike is not original. It is just a piece of leather and is not padded. From the original owner, who worked for the Bell Telephone system as a lineman in the late 1970’s to the late 1990’s, exact age is unknown. This is a pair of Pole/ tree climbers. Made by the Buckingham Manufacturing Company, not sure of age, but believe with the date code of 4-75 they were from the April 1975 era. The climbers are stamped on the main beam Buckingham BELL SYSTEM F. BUCKINGHAM 4-75, WE91171. in beam side is SHORT 14 3/4– 18 1/2 The top slide is adjustable. The gaffs are permanent CCA pole type and are 1 3/4”long. The shank is the contoured type. The top pads. Are stamped A.E. BURGESS LEA CO. 3-84. By the date I would assumed ... morethe pads were changed in 1984. The climbers have been lightly cleaned. And the leather treated with leather oil. Up for Auction are my climbers. I have been in the business for years and I no longer climb. I bought these for my own use but the company provided their own and required me to use theirs. This is a nice set of Klein Climbers. The gaffs are 1 1/2 inches and in good condition with only one significant nick. Both leather ankle straps have a lot of life left in them. There are some cracks in the top grain of the leather on one strap. The buckles will certainly outlast the leather. The climber shafts are slightly bowed so the top sleeve won't adjust all the way in. They are adjustable from 15 3/4 to 19 1/2 inches as measured from the bottom of the stirrup to the top of the sleeve. I'm not sure I would stretch them out that far though. They aren't twisted at all. The pads are Bashlin 140-DS with padding. The stitching is still good. Some thread ends have pulled out and there is that scuff I mentioned in the condition description on the inside of the one pad. This is a set of KLEIN climbing spikes/gaffs in very good shape.The spikes/gaffs are replaceable and are still very sharp and long. These are fully adjustable in height/length. Nice old pair of climbing spikes. Blacksmith made with forge welded hand hammered spikes. no markings that i could find. leather is very rotted with tears. one top strap is missing. they measure about 16 inches long. the spikes are about 3 inches long and the width of the boot opening is about 3 inches. these are early style as the iron straps go on the outside of the leg and the spike is on the open end. the dimensions of each vary slightly as they are hand made. I would not advise using these, They should be enjoyed as a fine antique and example of the blacksmith art.

I have an old western union lineman belt with strap the leather condition is good. Leather is stiff but pliable no cracks. There is a brass tag on the belt that reads Western Union Tel. Co. Mfg. R.H. Buhrke Co. There are two stamped number series one is 9-62 and the other is size 35 Do not have any more info on it have had it over 30 years myself.
