My cousin's family owned the Tahoe City Garage in the first half of the 20th century. This vintage 1940s dipping tape. Used to measure the level of the gasoline in the tanks, is part of a collection of tools that came with them into retirement. It has several markings identifying it: Lufkin Rule Co. Saginaw. Michigan, Made in USA, Atlas Chrome Clad, Hardened Steel Frame. The tape is in good condition with obvious age-appropriate rust. It still unwinds to its 50-foot length. And the reel works well to wind it back up. The tape beings at 9 inches, to account for solid brass plumb weight that hangs from the hook at the end of the tape. The brass plumb has measurement markings in 1-inch increments. The metal tape winds and unwinds smoothly and securely; set screw and crank turn easily, and ... moreare securely fastened to the steel frame.
