These were used some years back when diamond core drills were scarce to come by. Even today these are used because they never wear out like a diamond core drill. Although they cut a little slower than diamond they are a lot cheaper than a good quality core drill. Holes in glass plate or stone were traditionally cut using water and slurry. Used with an abrasive slurry these metal cylinders( cookie cutter) would cut through the material by the slurry falling in the slits of the core drill to cut into the glass/stone plate. A very inexpensive way to cut holes and they never wear out. These drills are made out of copper.
